Workplace rights

New workplace rights: check the date, not just the headline.

Some changes are here. Others are still ahead. The latest timetable makes that distinction important.

The Employment Rights Act 2025 is law, but its measures are being introduced in stages. The government's timetable, updated on 22 October, separates changes already in force from those still to come.

For example, the strengthened harassment prevention measures started on 30 October. The reduction of the unfair dismissal qualifying period to six months is scheduled for dismissals from 1 January 2027. It is not today's rule. Future dates can change.

Before acting on a post about a new right, check its start date, who it covers and the current Acas guidance. A headline is a useful starting point, not the whole answer.
